What is a driver

What is a driver and what is it used for?

A driver is a set of utilities that allow the operating system to work with a specific device on your computer. The task of the driver is processing requests from applications and system programs and translating them into language understandable to a physical device, as well as in managing its initialization data, settings, switching from one state to another.

The driver allows the operating system to communicate with a specific device through a common interface, not taking into account the characteristics of the device. In other words, the driver translates a high-level requests into a low-level machine language directly referring to the hardware resources.

Not for each device driver is required. If there is a strict standard that describes a set of commands, the sequence and timing of operations and other features work with this class of devices, the driver may not be necessary, as the operating system already incorporates all the necessary procedures. In principle, it can be called a built-in driver. An example is a keyboard, a timer, an external modem, and communications ports. But if the device can be replaced by another, different in terms of functionality, the driver installation is mandatory.

The driver may be contained in the distribution of the operating system. Then the question is no longer search for the driver itself. However, the device, which appeared after the official release of the OS will require installation of a separate driver, developed by the manufacturer. In addition, a set of drivers included with the operating system is small and covers only a small part or all of the most common standard devices such as “Plug and Play”.
